Emberiza schoeniclus
The reed bunting is a partial migrant in France, with individuals staying in winter joined by other northern breeders and individuals migrating to southern Eurasia and North Africa.
As its name suggests, the reed bunting frequents and nests in wetlands and reedbeds, in groups. An opportunist, it is a granivore in spring and rather an insectivore the rest of the time.
To find out more about the migration routes of reed buntings and their flight altitudes, they are captured using vertical nets at their coastal nesting sites in France.
They are fitted with a 0.5g GLS which records the data (approximate geographical positions and precise atmospheric pressure for altitude). In order to collect the data, the GLS must be recovered the following year by recapturing the birds on their return from wintering.
