Turdus pilaris
A large thrush that breeds in north-eastern Europe and as far as eastern Russia. Fieldfares tend to be gregarious and winter in southern Europe, particularly in France, where they can usually be spotted by their noisy chatter in trees or meadows and lawns. They are most often seen in mountainous regions in winter, when they are not migrating.
To find out about their migration routes and flight altitudes, fieldfares are captured on the French coast (Brittany or in the north) during the migration period using a vertical net. They are then fitted with a miniature 3.2g GPS which transmits their geographical positions live via 4G.
