Anthus trivialis
A small passerine, the tree pipit closely resembles its cousin the meadow pipit. This migratory bird lives in a large part of Eurasia and winters in sub-Saharan Africa.
Meadow pipits live in semi-wooded and open areas, moors, clearings and thickets. They are often victims of parasitism by common cuckoos, which lay eggs in their nests and leave them to raise their offspring.
To find out more about the migratory routes of pipits and their flight altitudes, particularly when crossing the English Channel, they are captured using vertical nets at their nesting sites in the UK. They are fitted with a 0.5g GLS which records the data (approximate geographical positions and precise atmospheric pressure for altitude). In order to collect the data, the GLSs have to be recovered the following year by recapturing the birds on their return from wintering.
